Joanne Polec

Holy Spirit Roman Catholic School Division
Associate Principal at Catholic Central High School
Joanne was born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta but comes from a multicultural background (Polish and Japanese) and speaks four languages (English, Polish, French and Japanese). She has been at Catholic Central High School (which is the only dual campus school in Alberta, operates on the Copernican system and is known for its progressive approaches to High School Redesign) in Lethbridge, Alberta for over 20 years in multiple roles – from student to student teacher to intern to English Language Arts and Japanese Language teacher and coach to guidance counsellor and, currently, as associate principal. Drawing upon her background, passion for teaching literacy, and experiences with the English curriculum and assessment, she is currently enveloped in her Master’s thesis which focuses on how teachers of literacy, who implement inquiry or project-based learning as well as a multi-literacies approach, work between the tensions of their own professional judgements about curriculum, pedagogy and assessment and the content and constructs of standardized testing. She is lucky to be supported in all her endeavors by her husband, Curtis and their two wonderful children, Kai and Emi.
